The filter media retains the suspended solids and also absorb organic substances to a certain degree. The filter utilize several layers of filter material graded by size and density The more substances are retained, the more the pressure loss within the filter bed increases, thus resulting in an increase in the differential pressure between the filter inlet and filter outlet. After a fined time, the substances now present in the filter medium have to be removed. Removing the retained substances will be accomplished with back-rinsing at regular intervals from bottom to top. The removal of particles will reduce the fouling potential of the RO units downstream.
